Jammu and Kashmir is made explicit in the number of beautiful temples that have been built in the vicinity of the state. Most of the Holy place are ancient and have been made by Kashmiri artisans. Jammu, the city of temples has a huge number of holy place that are beautiful with beautiful idols of gods, most of which are carved out in the state itself. A visit to the holy places in J&K leaves one fascinated. The work and the kind of architecture of these holy places are remarkable. In Valley, the most famous is the Shankaracharaya, which is built on the Shankaracharay Hill in Srinagar. From here you can have a panoramic view of the whole valley. Another important temple in Kashmir is the KhirBhawani in Ganderbal district. It is built inside a spring and the area around covered with marbles. This Holy place also is a marvelous piece of architecture.

The biggest temple complex in Jammu is the RAGUNATH. It comprises of 17 marvelous holy places. The Holy placeshave idols of Gods and Goddesses. The complex was constructed over a period of 6 years from 1851 to 1857. The construction began in the rule of Maharaja Gulab Singh with his orders and it was completed during the reign of Maharaja Ranbir Singh.
Another important temple and pilgrimage center is the MATA VAISHNO DEVI. It is the world famous Holy place of Jammu located on the Mata Vaishno hills. This is an important pilgrimage center for the Hindus and numerous pilgrims from all over India come to have a darshan and pay homage to the Goddess Vaishno Devi, to whom the temple is dedicated. This Holy place is located near Katra town of Reasi district of Jammu division. This Holy place is the most precious procession of the Reasi district. Over five million people visit the shrine annually. Holy place is actually a 100 feet long cave with a narrow opening. The water from the Holy Ganges washes the lotus feet of the holy goddesses ‘Pindian’. There are three natural Pindies of MahaSaraswati, Maha Lakshmi and Mahakali which are symbolic of the creative, preservative and destructive aspects of the Divine power. The shrine is ancient and finds mention in the vedas and many other religious scriptures of the Hindus.
Sri Vaishnodevi (Jammu)
This temple is as famous as Amarnathji or Ksheer Bhawani in Kashmir. Divine Mother is worshiped in the form of Vaishnavi. A pilgrimage to the Holy Shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji is considered to be one of the holiest pilgrimages of our times. Popular the world over as “Moonh Maangi Muradein Poori Karne Wali Mata” which means, the Mother who fulfills whatever Her children wish for, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Ji resides in a Holy Cave located in the folds of the three peaked mountain named Trikuta (pronounced as Trikoot). Daily pilgrims to this Temple exceed 30000. In fact, the number of Yatris visiting the Holy Shrine annually now exceeds one crore. This is due to the unflinching faith of the devotees who throng the Shrine from all parts of India and abroad.
Sharada Mataji (Jammu)
The ancient Sharada Mandir, which Adi Sankara visited, is now in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This Temple is situated on the banks of Kishanganga river. The people who were displaced from that place after partition of India, have now settled in Bantalab in Jammu. They have built a Temple similar to the one in POK. Sarda Devi is also known here as Goddess Saraswati. From time immemorial, Kashmir is known as Sharadapeeth.
Raghunathji Temple (Jammu)
Situated at the city center the inner walls of the main temple are covered with gold sheet on three sides while the interiors of the temple are plated with gold. There are many galleries of saligrams. The Temple is dedicated to various Gods and Goddesses connected with the epic Ramayana which make it a rare site to behold. The temple consists of seven shrines, each with a tower of its own. The main sanctuary is dedicated to Lord Vishnu's eighth incarnation the Rama.
Ranbireshwar Temple (Jammu)
Ranbireshwar Temple is the other well -known Shiva temple in Jammu. Ranbireshwar Temple has its own legend, its devotees and specific days of worship. This famour temple of Lord Shiva is located opposite Jammu & Kashmr Civil Secretariat, on Shalamar Road in Jammu. In Ranbireshwar Temple, there are twelve Shiva ‘lingams’ of crystal measuring 12" to 18" and galleries with thousands of ‘saligrams’ fixed on stone slabs.
Peer Kho cave temple (Jammu)
The Peer Kho cave temple overlooking the Tawi river is another well known Shiva temple in Jammu. Peer Kho cave is located on the bank of river Tawi and it is widely believed that Ramayan character Jamvant (the bear God) meditated in this cave.
Aap Shambhu Temple, (Jammu)
Temple at Sathrian in Roopnagar area of Jammu city is an ancient stone temple having a self- manifested stone Lingam According to a legend, in the times immemorial this entire place was an uninhabited jungle, the milky cows and buffaloes used to come to the Lingam after grazing and shed entire milk on the Lingam.
Sudh Mahadev Temple (Patnitop)
The small town of Chanhani, about 120 km from Jammu and 8 km from the enchanting hill station Patnitop, is a significant tourist destination because of the famous Sudh Mahadev Temple. This small temple, devoted to Lord Shiva, is a great piece of art. The secred temple of Sudh Mahadev, situated in the western part of Jammu, was constructed by Chaudhari Ramdas of Chanhani and his son Chaudhari Parag Mahajan about 80 years ago. Built at a height of about 1225 metres above sea level, the temple offers a wonderful view of the nearby hills and landscapes.
While visiting the temple, you see a natural black marble 'Shiva-Lingam' and an idol of Goddess Parvati mounted on the idol of Nandi. The temple is popular for the 'Dhooni', a constantly burning sacred fire, which serves as a memorial to the spiritual attainments of Baba Roop Nath, said to have attained Samadhi there. The devotees visit the shrine on full moon night of the rainy season to worship Lord Shiva. If you visit the temple during the rainy season, you can be a part of the music, dance, and other activities/games in a three-day fair that is organised annually, during July-August.
